- Pre-deployment training of all Nepali Army Contingent members begins on completion of the force generation procedure of NA DPKO. The duration of the training is 14 weeks. The PDT training encompasses the unit training which focuses on the Unit’s cohesiveness, coherence and professionalism, the UN Training which incorporates all the training materials and guidelines provided by the UN Integrated Training Service (ITS) and Mission Specific Training which shares the on-ground reality, prioritize the Mission essential Tasks and fill up the gaps in the training with the lesson learnt and good practices. Unit training, Generic UN training, Mission Specific Training and evaluation & validation are the four integral parts of pre-deployment training. The syllabus is designed as per the mission requirements, National training guidelines and UN Training polices and guidelines.
- The PDT is designed as per the training cycle shown in the figure above. The cycle starts with Combat Fitness Training, weapon training, PKO package, Basic Military Skills, mission specific training and ends with the completion of CPX and FTX.
- Pre-deployment training includes
- Combat Fitness. It specially focuses on combat fitness of an individual soldier. It is mandatory during all the packages of Pre- deployment training and fitness tests are conducted in every package. All the troops must pass the physical efficiency test before going for medical test. The physical efficiency test includes; BPFT, BFT and assault obstacle course.
- Weapon Conversion Training. The training is focused on enhancing weapon handling skills and to develop the confidence on their personal weapon. Weapons used in different units are different thus in order to converse the troops in to the same grid for the use of weapon during the deployment in mission the training is provided. Troops are also trained on different support weapons like MMG, MINIMI, 12.7 HMG etc as per the requirements and availability of weapons in the mission.
- Basic Military Skills. This training aims at developing common standards of military skills for the better mission performance and involved section and platoon level tactics, technique and procedures (TTPs) in order to develop a cohesive peacekeeping unit. It focuses on enhancing the Basic Military Skills of the individual which includes battle drills, anti ambush drills, tactical ops, Tactical combat casualty care, MR and navigations etc.
- Peace Keeping Operations Training. The PKO syllabus is designed with the reference to DPKO/DFS guidelines, CPTM Module 2017, STM on UNIBAM and other STMs on important aspects like POC, CRSV, CP, SEA etc. This training aims at imparting knowledge on the UN system, peacekeeping operations and the mission environment including Rules of Engagement (ROE). Focus is given to the code of conduct and other conduct aspects such as SEA (Sexual Exploitation and Abuse as Crime), Cultural awareness, Human Rights and Civil Military Liaison by conducting scenario based exercise.
- Mission Specific Training(MST). The training is focused on the Mission essential tasks. The syllabus is designed as per the requirement of the respective missions and emphasis is given on the nature of the duties to be executed by the peacekeepers in those particular missions. The centre takes assistance of the recently returned team of officers from the missions to update the syllabus and supervise the MST phase.
- Lane Training (Field Training Exercise). This training focuses on the tactical level
tasks at platoon and company level. The curriculum is also designed to
enhance the cohesiveness and team building capability of a unit. It is one of the most effective and a
key training
activity in the centre at the tactical level. Lane training is further divided into six different
categories:
- Checkpoint (Static and Mobile)
- Cordon and Search Operations
- Patrol (Mobile, Foot and Aerial patrols)
- Disarmament site Security/Designated site security
- Protection of Distribution Site for Humanitarian Agencies
- Convoy Operations
- Besides above mentioned lanes, units are trained as part of general training on protection of Civilians, to handle displaced civilians such as refugees, returnees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and the Units train themselves emphasizing on the Mission essential Tasks identified after the Mission Specific Training.
- Command Post Exercise (CPX) and Field Training Exercise (FTX). CPX and FTX are designed to exercise all the key appointments and troops in a mission environment. It is conducted at both the operational and tactical level simulating different scenarios and incidents at the final stage of the pre deployment training in order to ensure that the contingents are ready for deployment as per the DPKO requirement.
- Enablers Training. The pre-deployment training also includes training of enablers and other miscellaneous training such as French language for troops deploying in francophone countries and training of drivers of different vehicles. We also have designed ourselves a 3 days long training for Female engagement Team which is intended to enhance understanding of impacts of conflict on women and girls, thereby facilitating interaction and outreach to the half of the population in the mission area. Apart from that we conduct driving, unarmed combat, EOD related trainings the center.
